S.F. Caters to Developers

By Sarah Chavez, San Francisco | 7/4/2023

Regarding “Almost no housing is getting built in S.F. Here’s Breed and Peskin’s plan to kickstart building (San Francisco, SFChronicle.com, June 27): As a resident and student witnessing San Francisco’s housing crisis, I don’t understand the logic behind lowering the required affordable units for projects that were already approved.

This proposal caters to developers rather than prioritizing the needs of the community. Decreasing the obligations or fees for projects that were already approved undermines the initial commitment to provide affordable housing.

Once again, the city is prioritizing the wealthy and luxury real estate companies while budget cuts reduce funds from departments and programs that actually benefit our communities, schools and families.

Instead of reducing affordable housing requirements and fees and creating more for-profit luxury housing, the focus should be on addressing the housing shortage and filling existing empty units to prioritize the community over developers.
