It’s Time to Insulate California’s Budget

The national House Republicans are gearing up for major cuts to necessary programs while also giving trillions of dollars of tax breaks, some of which are intended for billionaires and corporations. This new Republican federal budget could be disastrous for California’s budget in turn, which relies on federal funding for Medicaid, which more than a quarter of Californians are on. This federal budget also slashes other social safety net programs, such as increased premiums for those with Affordable Care Act health insurance, lower benefits for low-income recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and reductions in housing vouchers.

It’s time to ensure California’s budget is insulated from the whims of the federal government. One key step in this plan is to reform Proposition 13, which would provide a steady $12 billion every year to not only our public school systems, but also numerous essential California public services for our communities. Californians have gone without that $12 billion dollars stolen from us by corporations for far too long. We need to close the corporate loophole in order to sustain the programs and resources necessary for so many Californians to live.
