Jerry Brown: No More Tax Breaks for Corporations

Former Governor Jerry Brown, echoing concerns raised by Governor Gavin Newsom and the Legislature’s Democratic majority, has urged the California Supreme Court to remove a November ballot measure that would mandate voter approval for all new state or local taxes or fees. Brown argued that such a measure would severely restrict the Legislature’s ability to address pressing issues such as climate change by tying its hands in enacting necessary taxation measures. Additionally, he contended that the proposal would complicate funding for essential state programs and emergencies by requiring every tax increase to be individually approved by voters, effectively hindering the state's financial flexibility.

The right-wing California Business Roundtable's November ballot measure is attracting significant criticism, particularly with the unexpected opposition from former Governor Jerry Brown. It's quite surprising, given Brown's history of controversial stances, especially regarding schools. Yet, his stance against this measure adds a new dimension to the debate. Despite the unexpected nature of Brown's opposition, it underscores the urgency of the issue. Now more than ever, we need to advocate for corporations to pay their fair sharefor fair taxation. This isn't just about taxes; it's about standing up for our schools and communities against corporate interests.
