New Attendance Funding Plan to Provide More Money for K-12 Schools

In a move that could bring an additional $3 billion per year to California public schools, state lawmakers are introducing a bill to tie educational funding to annual enrollment. This bill would abolish the state’s previous system of providing funding based on daily attendance, which significantly harmed school districts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attendance-based funding has contributed to a statewide gap in educational equity and punishes schools which already lack resources. Additionally, because the absentee rate for Black students is more than double that of white students, moving away from attendance-based funding will ensure more racial justice in our classrooms! If passed, this bill will benefit California students for years to come!
