Newsom Vetos Student Mental Health

Student mental health has become a major crisis in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many students are struggling and need counseling resources and extra support. Gov Gavin Newsom has a track record of advocating for student mental health, and claims to have provided billions of dollars to support mental health services in schools. However, Newsom recently vetoed the important AB552, which would enable students with private health insurance to receive counseling resources at school. Why would a Governor who has supported mental health issues deny students valuable counseling?

The truth is, California public schools should have the funding and resources to provide counseling to ALL students. Newsom should affirm his commitment to student mental health by securing long term, significant funding for ALL California public schools for years to come. Now more than ever we need to take student mental health seriously and do all that we can to support the next generation.
