Proposition 13 Continues to Make Headlines
Prop 13 continues to make state headlines as a major barrier to securing funding for government projects. In 2022, Gov Gavin Newsom took a swing at the measure by proposing financial penalties on oil companies, such as Chevron, which directly benefit from Prop 13. In LA, voters approved Proposition ULA to generate up to $1 billion to fight homelessness.
Unfortunately, big oil and groups like the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (behind the original Prop 13) contend that these tax increases are unfair and prohibited. They will undoubtedly use their wealthy donors and corporate power to wage a legal battle, continuing to harm marginalized citizens of CA who need the funding!
