Reading IS a Civil Right!
Richmond’s Nystrom Elementary School is tackling their below-grade literacy rates not as an academic issue but as a civil rights issue. The elementary is a predominantly Black and Latino school in one of the Bay Area’s poorest districts. Nystrom Elementary is a perfect example of California’s low reading levels, especially when comparing the disparities between POC vs. white and wealthy students.
Reading is tied to so many aspects of our life. Not only do you need it to navigate your day to day, but your understanding of the world hinges upon literacy. Unfortunately, so many kids, especially black and brown children, are left behind in literacy rates. This all stems from predominantly POC communities not getting the funding they deserve, both their schools and public services. Students should not be reading below grade level because of their zip code! All children deserve the right to read if we want a well-informed electorate, a thriving workforce, and, especially, a bright future for our kids.
