Budget Cuts On the Way for SRVUSD; Parents and Teachers Protest
The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has put in motion a plan to cut $26 million of funding from the school district’s budget – despite ongoing and vocal opposition from the San Ramon community. Despite this disheartening news, parents, teachers, staff, and community members are still fighting back. The SRV Education Association organized protests outside of all 35 school campuses in the district, a strong show of community support for public education. SRVUSD’s superintendent called these budget cuts an “operational necessity,” but they slash mental health services, increase class sizes, and fire teachers: all resources which are vital to student success.
Prop. 13 is responsible for these unacceptable cuts. Cuts such as these would not be necessary if we reform Prop. 13, which would restore $12 BILLION every single year to our California schools and communities. Those billions of dollars would assuage the need to cut programs to balance the budget across many California schools and school districts. Our communities showing up in favor of more public school funding show that Californians want more funding for public education. Prop. 13 reform, and the positive changes it would bring to schools is the best way forward to ensure our students get the education and support they need.
