Three Unhoused San Francisco Families Evicted from Shelter

The city of San Francisco evicted three unhoused families from a shelter run by Catholic Charities this week. These three families were three of thirty to be evicted after the city of San Francisco reintroduced a pre-pandemic policy that caps the number of nights families may stay in city-contracted homeless shelters. Mayor Daniel Lurie told these families they would be allowed to stay as long as they were making “positive progress” towards finding housing, but only days later some of these families were served eviction notices.

This reinstatement of this pre-pandemic policy regarding homeless shelters is ignorant of the material reality homeless families face in San Francisco, and how difficult it is to find both employment and affordable housing. If the city of San Francisco really wants to tackle its homelessness crisis, evicting families in city-contracted shelters is cruel and counterintuitive. It is incredibly unsafe to be unhoused, especially for the women and children who make up these families. Forcing them back on the street will not end the cycle of homelessness, and San Francisco officials should work towards finding real, sustainable solutions for these families.
