UCPD’s Arsenal is Increasing While Decreasing Student’s Voices

Students are alarmed about the UC Regents’ approval of increased weapon and ammunition supplies for campus police, and rightfully so. This move, justified as necessary for safety, raises serious concerns about the militarization of campus security, especially given last year’s protests for Palestine. UC officials argue this equipment is meant to provide non-lethal alternatives, but students and many observers strongly disagree. Protests at campuses like UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC Santa Cruz highlight the growing disconnect between campus leadership and the student body.

Since the passage of AB481 in 2021, all law enforcement agencies, including UC police, must publicly request approval for new weapons, but this hasn’t eased concerns. Students argue that investing in more weapons only escalates tensions, especially in the wake of violent clashes with protesters. The UC Student Association has called for the Regents to prioritize student basic needs like housing and food security instead of funding for more weapons. If the university focused on addressing these critical needs rather than expanding police arsenals, it could create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone.
