Free Food for Kids!
By Jules Pizano
A pretty notorious aspect of going to public schools is how bad the school lunches are. I remember the only appetizing thing to eat was pizza, which is not very nutritious and wouldn’t be the most nutritious food to eat especially if I had afterschool activities. Many of the food options didn’t taste very good, and many of the meat options were often undercooked.
To add on top of the already unsatisfactory meal, a school lunch cost $3.50. Being in highschool at the time, I didn’t have a job where I could use my money to buy lunch. There would be many days where I decided not to eat lunch because it cost money I didn’t have and I didn’t want to pay for something that I would take three bites out of and throw away. I would starve until dinner time and not have enough energy to finish the rest of the day at school. The budget for school lunches is low making it inaccessible to feed students with high quality foods. Food is vital for a student’s mind and energy levels!
This does not even get into the school lunch debt that many kids have to face. Why do we think not feeding our kids—especially while they’re at school—is the right choice to take? But one thing is for sure: both these issues are because of a severe lack of funding.
