Community Colleges Need to Focus on Retention

California’s community colleges are seeing a drop in enrollment rates. Thankfully, the drop did not equal a loss of funding for the schools thanks to a protection formula. This means more funding for students still enrolled. The biggest problem, however, is how to keep these students enrolled.

The drop in enrollment for community colleges (but continued funding) means a new opportunity to provide more attention and resources to students still in attendance. Community colleges also need to remedy the disproportionate number of Latino, Black, and Native American students dropping out; only 14% of Latino students finish community college in 4 years and only 9% of Black and Native American students finish.
