School Closures Held Back With New SFUSD Superintendent

School closures have been looming large over every student, parent, and staff member of SFUSD, but with the resignation of school board superintendent Matt Wayne, worried individuals can sigh in relief. Maria Su, co-leader of Mayor London Breed’s SFUSD task force, will take the helm of the school district through June 2026. Su assuaged fears of a state takeover in a press conference, and promised to deliver a balanced budget by December 15th. However, while the current school closure plan has been stopped, that does not mean school closures will not be considered in the future.

This new threat of school closures and budget issues haunting SFUSD has one easy solution — reforming Prop. 13. Reforming Prop. 13 would restore billions of dollars to our California schools every single year, and would ensure that SFUSD has the budget to keep schools open. It would give SFUSD the funds to stabilize its budget and restore trust in its leadership. Every school in SFUSD is an important pillar of the community it serves, and closing any one of them would be devastating. The benefits of closing the corporate loophole and reforming Prop. 13 can not be understated, and is the key to finally righting the course for SFUSD and putting an end to these inequitable school closure threats.
