300 Homeless Residents of Oakland Are at Risk of Permanent Displacement!
Residents of an Oakland homeless encampment have been rewarded a temportaty restraining order, protecting their living environment from invasion by Caltrans which plans to clear out the property. Caltrans has not provided specifics on where people will be moved and what the plans are for their belongings. In his decision, a federal judge declared that he was distributed by the lack of planning by the city and the state. Yet the decision remains temporary and about 300 people are currently at risk of displacement.
We need to provide more funding to social services to work with the 300 homeless individuals and provide them with housing security. The encampment does present some public safety risks, but the residents should be treated like human beings and given agency in the process. Clearing out houseless individuals without having adequate funding or alternatives is NOT a long-term solution!
