Construction Set to Begin to Destroy Historic People’s Park

An Alameda County Superior Court judge has okayed construction on the historic People’s Park in Berkeley. Students and residents have long pushed to protect the park as a residence for many homeless individuals in the city, who rely on the park and its structures for shelter and safety. Construction is planned to commence this Summer, and UC Berkeley plans to build more dormitories for more students, increasing the student population while displacing longtime residents.

We must organize in support of community needs and halt UC’s development on the park. Instead of providing for students that are not yet enrolled on campus, the university must provide funding and social services to current residents of People’s Park. The city and university must work together to ensure a fair and equitable Berkeley for all, rather than protecting the needs of a wealthy elite.
